Balbriggan Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) aims to create an energy efficient and resilient community through knowledge sharing and learning, community-led renewable energy and nature-based solutions.

We chose a millwheel for our logo as Balbriggan had the first water-powered loom in Ireland, the energy was used for the local textile factories. Our SEAI Energy Master Plan can be viewed here:

Knowledge sharing and learning

The aims/objectives of Balbriggan Sustainable Energy Community CLG, as set out in our Constitution.

The main aim is to establish a Balbriggan Sustainable Energy Community in line with the intentions of the EU Renewables Directive to support a just transition to a resilient, low-carbon community powered by renewable energy. We work together to promote the SEC widely and encourage participation from all residents, businesses, clubs, volunteer groups and community representatives. We actively engage with the SEC Network and SEAI to provide feedback, share knowledge and support the SEC national mission.

  • Building awareness of energy efficiency and renewable energy grants and initiatives through knowledge sharing and learning

  • Delivering community energy projects and reinvesting in the community

  • Supporting actions to address energy poverty in the community

  • Developing energy upskilling and employment opportunities in the area

  • Promoting nature-based solutions and considering biodiversity in all SEC activities

  • Developing sustainable business models that enable Balbriggan SEC to reduce reliance on volunteerism and grant funding

Community-led renewable energy

  • We received funding from the Fingal Community Climate Action Fund to do energy upgrade work with Balbriggan Meals on Wheels and Balbriggan Football Club. Other projects are a cargo bike locker for Balbriggan Tidy Towns and a biodiversity area on St Peter and Paul's Church grounds.

  • We are collaborating with Codema - Dublin's Energy Agency and Fingal County Council as partner on an EU Funded project focused on the designation of Balbriggan as Fingal's Decarbonising Zone.

  • We are also working through the SEAI Community Enabling Framework resources that support communities to develop their own grid scale renewable energy projects. A feasibility study will inform how the project develops.

Increase awareness of how building retrofits can impact on nature

  • We are developing information and a webinar with Swift Conservation Ireland to raise awareness among the national SEC network of how building retrofits can impact on birds and bats.
